Pare was hired by the Town of Holliston to provide engineering services for the completion of the rehabilitation of Factory Pond Dam and the adjoining Woodland Street Bridge. The 135-feet long earthen dam was originally constructed in 1873 and impounds the Bogastow Brook to create the 60 acre-feet Factory Pond. The crest of the dam carries Woodland Street, a major collector roadway that services single family residences, local businesses, and three school complexes. The roadway was closed after an emergency inspection of the bridge in February 2023.
Pare’s dam and bridge engineers worked together to design the sizeable project—which included a major rehabilitation of the dam and total replacement of the bridge—on an accelerated schedule. Having previously completed an alternatives analysis and report, Pare had insight into the deficiencies and required repairs and upgrades needed for Factory Pond Dam. The alternatives proposed in the report considered the existing deficiencies as well as needed upgrades to bring the dam to compliance with Massachusetts Dam Safety Regulations.
Pare performed detailed hydrologic & hydraulic analyses for the Bogastow Brook and its contributing watershed with a particular focus on the dam and bridge hydraulic structures. This analysis was used to inform hydraulic design of the interconnected dam spillway and bridge system. The final design included complete spillway replacement, implementation of a mid-level and low-level outlet structure, embankment repairs to the earthen portions of the dam, and complete replacement of the Woodland Street bridge.
Construction was performed between March 2025 and September 2025, with the roadway opening to traffic at the start of the school year. Pare ultimately provided work for every phase of the project—starting with preliminary data collection, advancing through design and permitting, and culminating in construction.
