Overview

Pare Corporation was hired by the City of Newport Department of Utilities to provide design and construction-phase services for approximately 2,500 linear feet of new 8-inch, 12-inch, and 18-inch gravity sewers in Bedlow Avenue, Curry Avenue, and Smith Avenue. Pare performed a preliminary evaluation and prioritized the replacement of these sections of sewer over other projects in the City based on their age and condition.

One of the unique challenges to this project was that part of the project included replacement of a large interceptor sewer, which required significant temporary bypass pumping to maintain sanitary flow during construction. Existing utilities posed another challenge, as each street was served by active and abandoned gas lines, transite water mains that required relocation in several areas, drainage, and underground electric and communication utilities.

A portion of the 18-inch interceptor traveled cross-country. Part of construction included investigated the alignment, identifying buried manholes, and providing surface access for future maintenance.

The project was completed under the budget established by the City.
