Overview

The Town of Barrington hired Pare to perform site investigations of Landfills No. 3 and 4 in accordance with Section 7 of the RI Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) Remediation Regulations in preparation for closure and possible reuse of the landfills. Tasks included an initial field investigation, post-investigation, and preparation of a Site Investigation Report for both landfills. The purpose of the site investigations was to determine what actions would be required to archive the sites from the Comprehensive Environmental Response and Compensation Liability Information System (CERCLIS) and to obtain a Letter of Compliance from RIDEM.

Pare then prepared a Remedial Action Work Plan (RAWP) for each landfill in accordance with the RIDEM Voluntary Landfill Closure Program. Engineering controls proposed for each landfill included a low-permeability soil cap, a gas ventilation system, and an Environmental Land Use Restriction (ELUR) system.

The capping is complete for both landfills and they are being used for passive recreation as the design incorporated a walking path and track and field throwing events, due to the proximity to Barrington High School.
