Overview

In efforts to alleviate traffic operation and safety problems at the Williams Street / County Street intersection, the City of Taunton proposed to extend the Honorable Gordon M. Owen Riverway approximately 1,000 feet to provide an efficient alternate route which bypassed the intersection. Extended to County Street from its terminus at Williams Street, the Owen Riverway encounters an unavoidable wetland/stream crossing which required a major culvert design coupled with wetland replication. Project design also included hydraulic analyses, traffic capacity analysis, consideration of compensatory flood storage, and reduction of sideslope fill and installation of retaining walls to minimize environmental impacts. The project also included the rehabilitation of approximately 1,675 feet of Williams Street and geometric improvements to both the County Street and Williams Street intersections with the Gordon M. Owen Riverway. In addition, a traffic signal was designed for the Williams Street/Owen Riverway intersection.
