Overview

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation was awarded a USDOT BUILD Grant for the construction of the Pell Bridge Ramp realignment project in Newport, RI. Pare designed the first phase of that project, improvements to JT Connell Highway/Coddington Highway, with a total project length of 1.4 miles. The project scope included the addition of a new 12’-14’ shared use path running parallel to the roadway. Also Included as part of this project is a hybrid-pedestrian beacon signal (HAWK) for a roadway crossing of the new bike path.

The stormwater management strategies for the roadway and bike path include treatment by vegetated filter strips, catch basins with deep sumps, and bioretention areas to manage runoff. The project also includes landscape buffering between the bike path and roadway and between the bike path and adjacent properties.

Construction was completed in Summer of 2021.
